How acupuncture works

How acupuncture works

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. Approached from a western point of view, this stimulates the body's nervous system to produce naturally occurring chemicals such as endorphins. Many GP practices around the UK prescribe acupuncture for conditions such as migraines, osteoarthritis of the knee and chronic pain conditions.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view, acupuncture regulates the body's flow of energy. Due to lifestyle and environmental reasons, this flow of energy can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in symptoms of pain and physical and/or mental illness.

What can it do for me?

Some people turn to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing.

Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions.

Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing. It is often used effectively alongside conventional medicine and is considered suitable for all ages.
